Quite a grim start to the book where a girl and a young boy are in a room behind a newsagents shop when something awful happens. The "bad man" the young boy, Dev, refers to is in the shop arguing with his father Arjun, when there's suddenly a sickening thud and a scream from the shop and Dev rushes out. The girl glimpses through the gap in the door and sees the smartly dressed "bad man" drag Dev into the shop and she sees he has a knife.
