Tom Wilde and Lydia are on their honeymoon In France when he learns that an ex-student of his in in an internment camp for returnees from the Spanish Civil War. Feeling duty bound to help him he does so but soon after events around him, Lydia and this young man begin to spiral out of control.
This story takes place as war is declared in 1939 and as all that Wilde and millions across the world once held dear are threatened by the actions of Nazi Germany. It accurately reflects the moral ambiguities of the time in relation to the fear of both National Socialism and Communism and the complexities arising from the ending of the Spanish Civil War. It also depicts the political factionalism of France and the United Kingdom at this time. Indeed I found many parallels between then and the current UK political scene.
While doing all of this the plot also holds true to the style of the previous Wilde novels with the focus on the solving of complex problems and Wilde’s action man persona. I found this to be a very enjoyable book and probably the best of the previous books in the series that I have read.
