The book starts off pretty much where the previous one had left off, with our hero Wilde on a honeymoon, of sorts. Of course he never actually got married, but they took the holiday anyway, to unwind after all the escapades in the previous book. While on 'honeymoon' they encounter a strange fellow who had been looking for them, he lets Wilde know that one of his former students was in a pow camp and that Wilde was the only one who could help. So Wilde does, and brings him back to Britain. But he would soon wish that he hadn't, as this former student was not who he seemed to be.
Wilde starts to suspect something is afoot, and the more he looks into the former pupil the less he likes what he finds. All the while the is taking place in the backdrop to the beginnings of World War 2, we get a taste of what it must have been like in those first early days, with the blackout curtains going up and the first air raid warnings, and hints of rationing towards the end of the book.
Perfectly atmospheric for a spy hunt across the Cambridge countryside and the foiling of an undoubted but as yet mysterious plot. It's a breathless race towards the showdown and left me wanting more! I really hope there is another in this series planned, we are only at the beginnings of the war, we have a lot of ground that can still be covered.
