What an interesting beginning to a book that leaves you full of questions! The basic and open style of the writing reminds you of a general thought process and keeps the reader feeling involved and informed with everything the main character is doing. Stacey Woods introduces herself as girl X and, though this gives a generic dystopian air to the novel’s opening, it becomes clear that she feels irrelevant and used in a modern day, ordinary society - she was raped. Commonly considered as a taboo topic, and with good reason, rape is not something that is introduced in the opening of a book with such blunt decisiveness. The trial begins on Monday, she is absolutely terrified and - worst of all - still has feelings for the brother of her rapist... who organised the rape.
This opening sets the reader up with terror, intrigue and a genuine interest in what’s going on and how Stacey will handle the court case looming on the horizon. An inticing opening to a clearly exciting novel!
