Set in Cambridge in 1939 with World War II on the horizon this is not your standard "war" novel but more of a spy thriller. It revolves around the race to develop an atomic bomb. Nothing is off limits, a child is kidnapped as a means of blackmailing his mother and the two top Cambridge scientists are tortured (and eventually murdered) in an attempt to gain their secrets.
Mixed into all this is a Hollywood movie starlet, an IRA bombing plot and a mysterious unknown person who is pulling all the strings.
In the midst of all this is Tom Wilde who is the perfect "James Bond" character. American but very British at the same time. He has strong friendships with all the key players and a flirtation with the movie star (to provide a bit of a "will he won't he cheat" love angle). We have an aeroplane chase to save the secrets of fission and meanwhile the Mr Big pulling the strings is definitely not who you expect it to be.
Full of twists and turns but very readable as you get to see all the character's personal flaws. This is a real page turner and Tom Wilde makes the perfect hero.
