Caroline used to be a ‘Perfect Ten’ according to her ex-husband Jack. She lives alone, suffering, having had her children taken away in an acrimonious split with her ex and is trying hard to keep everything together after losing everything.

When Jack’s luggage is accidentally delivered to her address Caroline has a little snoop in his prized possession, his overnight bag. There she finds a journal which is to change everything. In it she finds evidence that Jack hasn’t had one, but many, many affairs, marking women out of ten and leaving sleazy pictures and souvenirs in his book. Caroline now makes her bid for revenge – to find these women, her children back and make Jack suffer.

Oh this is a good book! At first I wasn’t sure about it but having read 200 pages (approximately two thirds) of the book in the first sitting this was totally gripping! I absolutely loved and rooted for Caroline to get one over on the slick and successful Jack.

There’s lots to like about this book. It’s clever with lots of nods to social media and how one can totally ruin someone’s reputation in the click of a button. Caroline, whilst excellent at her job, suffers in silence and only the reader gets to see how humiliated she feels and her irrational actions, both in the home and outside, show how desperate she is to get back at Jack. There’s lots of dark places we get to see but at the same time Caro is spiky, sassy and stronger than she thinks she is.

This is a brilliant debut novel with one secret following another and surprises around every corner. We see how Caro is falling apart after losing her children and how she has to act around the rich ex-husband who is unfailingly trying to topple her and make everyone around her think she is mentally unstable.

Compelling and, at times sinister, this is a fascinating and frightening read into a fractured relationship and the aftermath. Loved it!
