Piranesi, who narrates the story, lives in a mysterious house reminiscent of mythological labyrinths. There are tides in the house, and an Other who visits Piranesi twice a week to request assistant in discovering "A Great and Secret Knowledge".
Moving around the house, Piranesi charts differences form day to day and reads into them signs and meaning which he documents in his journal in the hope of understanding who and where he is. Throughout the book Piranesi notices signs of another person in the house and a dark story starts to unfold.
This book requires total immersion; Clarke has built a rich, complex world in order to tell this dark tale. I enjoy mythology but fantasy is not usually my cup of tea, this book manages to blend mythology, fantasy and mystery all in one and pulls it off excellently.
