An epic story of lost magic & fairies, set not only in the eighteenth century but also five hundred years previous with the telling of some fascinating history. Susanna Clark's Jonathan Strange & Mr Norell is quite the read at approximately 800 pages (which is more or less divided in to 3 books) and just about 200 footnotes, but don't let that deter you as it's such a fantastic and delightful book.

Although this book is based around magic don't expect it to be in the same portrayal of magic as Harry Potter though. This is so much more sophisticated and where the magic isn't the centre of the story. The writing style is classic English Jane Eyre meets Charles Dickens, which works very smoothly.

I loved the characters too. They worked extremely well together which made the story utterly believable.

The only fault I found is that some of the chapters felt like they dragged on for much longer than needed.

All in all this is a truly brilliant read and I urge those that have not yet read Jonathan Strange & Mr Norell to give it go.
