Piranesi is writing a journal; this is not the journal per se but it reads like it is. Piranesi resides in the most part alone in a set of halls and rooms which he navigates seamlessly. He is particular and direct which acts as a counterbalance to the story and narrative. It is unlike anything I've read before and required me to think a lot about what is actually going in.
Furthermore, it took me a while to get into this book as the structure and form is quite different to the 'run of the mill' fiction and I had to ensure I fully understood what I'd read before moving on. I wouldn't let that put you off as you soon become accustomed to it though. It is written in such a way to demonstrate the meticulous and fastidious nature of Piranesi who is somewhat an enigma and it gives you an insight into the workings of his mind which in the end is an integral part of the book.
A very intriguing and puzzling read where you just want to know what is going on!
