Reading Piranesi was like stepping into another world. The book presents a series of vivid descriptions which transport you to a different time and place, one filled with meteorological cycles and symbology. A series of statues that depict relatable figures that become Piranesi’s only companions in this new world… for a while at least.
The book interweaves this new and strange place with a true crime twist, exploring the dangers of trusting people whose intentions may not be as straight forward as they first appear and that not all ‘authority’ figures have your best interests at heart.
Piranesi is a likeable and relatable soul, who becomes the quiet hero of the novel through his bravery and subtle acts of defiance. The character shows that following your instinct and listening to yourself when things do not seem right, can end up unravelling falsehoods and lead to finding truths which open up new worlds. Highly recommend!
