Mattie Brogan comes from a poor East End Irish Catholic family. She wants to get a proper education and help England fight the Germans when war breaks out. Christopher Joliffe works in a bank and can afford to provide Mattie with Iuxuries she has never enjoyed before. However, Mattie can't stop thinking about Daniel, the new assistant priest. Neither Christopher nor Daniel are all they seem to be.
I wouldn't normally choose to read this type of 'old lady' book but I'm glad I did. There was more substance to the story than I thought there would be - more like a Jack Higgins spy novel.
Only real criticism was the many spelling, typo and grammatical
errors (vernacular railway!!!!) which always distract me from the story - would have given it 4 stars otherwise.
