Set at the outbreak of WWII, Pocketful of Dreams follows East End working class family the Brogans, centering on eldest daughter Mattie.
I have very mixed thoughts on this book. The cover (and that title!) looks like the kind of thing my Nan would have read and the synopsis gives a rather bland sounding story. However, there is some depth to it and it turned out to be not quite what I expected.
There is a lot of discrepancies in the story as well as basic grammatical errors that the publisher doesn't seem to have picked up on. There is also a lot of repetition; the author seemed to feel the need to give the height of every character as well as, in some cases, their chest size. Her favourite choice of decor also seemed to be a half tiled wall with emulsion paint above, something mentioned on at least 4 separate occasions.
Overall the book was fine, it probably would have been a good story for a first time writer, but given the list of previous publications at the start I would have expected better.
