The prologue dives straight into Sophie (Snow White's) death at the hands of the huntsman. Not an obvious start to the story, but definitely intriguing.

We move on to be introduced properly to Sophie and the Queen.
Immediately Donnelly draws us in gaining our empathy for Sophie who feels “less than” because of her step-mother the Queen, and society's expectations. We are shocked by the disdain, harsh, unfeeling, and cruel actions of the Queen, who states she must be this way because of society.

All this we are told by the narrator, who states that he has died for his cruel and wrong actions in life.

Definitely a fairy tale retelling I want to hear more of!
