Great opening to a Darker retelling?

I'm often not that interested in rewrites or retellings of older stories or fairy tales. Too frequently they either don't diverge enough to be interesting or original or try too much to stand out from the core story at the loss of cohesion.

However this first impression left me with none of these misgivings ,indeed it was a really good first look.

It's opened like a good YA/Adult fantasy story, with the dark evil queen and the castle settings, your standard array of characters but very well written to nudge my imagination into picturing the world on every page.

The fact that the author has openly said it is a feminist take on the tale doesn't concern me as so far this doesn't seem too political yet, it just has female protagonists who are strong, like many a good story does and therefore should be a good read.

It was a dark and interesting opening that really drew me in, and I dare say if I hadn't read the blurb and found the connection to Snow White I would be more drawn in and keen to read more. As it is it definitely has potential to make me rethink my doubts on this kind of story.
