This book promises to be an interesting exploration of the patriarchy in Snow White. How rigidly does a queen have to play the game expected of her in order to continue to wield power? Sophie’s wicked stepmother, the queen regent, believes she must play the game very rigidly indeed. But her rationale is presented with some sympathy for her unusual position as a female ruler, which adds a nice nuance. On the cover of ‘Stepsister’ by the same author, there are more jagged shards of glass which disrupt the Disney-like sheen of the slipper and add this nuance to it. I think a similar gritty contrast would have improved this cover. I want the stepmother to feel remorse for her actions in the coming pages.
