This is a retelling that is truly unlike anything I have read before in a lot of ways. It still has the fun twist of the story you love with new aspects but is also laced with some stronger messages and conversations.
This story is filled with metaphors and deeper meanings and one more than anything else. What it is to be a strong woman. Who really is the villain in the story if it has only ever been told by a man. Kings get to be loved whereas queens must be feared to hold their power, it really does hold a lot of weight when you consider the fairytales we as a society know and love.
There is a harsh reality of this book as well as a undeniable intelligence that makes it feel very well thought out. Even the tone of the story fits perfectly with this agenda. At first it reads very similarly to that of a traditional fairytale however there are some definite undertones that have a more ominous and atmospheric nature.
It is easy to fall into this world and get sucked into a plot so it is undeniably a great read, particularly for the age range of this genre.
