I loved this. I was really excited when this came out as I really enjoyed 'step sister'. It is a feminist take on snow white (I wish I had been told this version as a child). It is such a page turner but really explores gender inequality - why does no book about a king start with talking about his wrinkles??? Princess Sophie is a great character, she starts off with not much belief in herself as all her life she has been told she is too soft hearted and won't ever manage as Queen. As well as the magical fairytale journey Sophie takes we get to see how she learns to stop listening to these voices and believe that she can be a ruler and that her compassion and kindness will help not hinder this. I love how she learns to really see her people and learns to become a strong, powerful young woman without losing herself. I was wondering all the way through how the kiss would be handled as we couldn't have a handsome prince saving Sophie! I don't want to give anything away but this was one of my favourite moments in the book. An amazing read.
