I really enjoyed Jennifer Donnelly's 'Step Sister', a twist on the Cinderella story, so I was excited to see the release of 'Poisoned' which delves into the take of Snow White. The story is given a new and exciting twist as the huntsman attempts to kill protagonist Sophie as per the original story. Like the dwarfs in the original, seven strangers help Sophie to solve the mystery around her and she realises that the poison of the words that people repeatedly spoke about her and her being useless had rubbed off on her and she believed she was as useless as they said. Donnelly takes this fairytale, which we may think is far removed from our own lives, and places it within the 'poison' that we deal with everyday in a toxic society through social media and face-to-face interactions. Therefore, she is not just telling Sophie's story, or Snow White's before her, but the story of every young girl who has ever been bullied, any woman who has ever been told she is not good enough and every person who has ever been talked to in poisonous terms, therefore despite its appearance as a fairytale is a powerful look at all our own lives.
