Poisoned starts with Sophie, an overall lovely kind princess who is about to come of age and inherit her crown and empire of her Late Fathers. The Queen, her stepmother, insists that Sophie is too kind and immature to govern the kingdom and so advises her huntsman to take Sophie to the woods and hack her heart out. Sophie survives with the aid of seven enigmatic strangers and so begins her journey to show that kindness can triumph over evil.
This book explores topics such as family, compassion, friendship, and faith. This is a very grim retelling of a fairytale. I really liked Snow White's tale as a kid and it's great to hear it told in this amazing feminist way. In words and metaphors, the writer has an excellent touch, and in her trademark brilliant way, she has written Poisoned. I considered the Queen's character, who is the wicked stepmother of Sophie, amazing, and she had the most fascinating backstory.
overall a really good read.
