Who doesn't love a fairy tale retelling? Although I'm not a fan of the "her lips were the color of ripe cherries" trope, I definitely wanted to pursue the story despite it. I liked that the prologue jumped right into the action and didn't drone on with details like some long, winding ones do sometimes. The first page already had some surprising action which caught me off-guard and the imagery was super vivid. From there, it got a bit confusing.
The writing is cute and definitely reflective of a teen novel. The unfortunate thing with fairytale retellings is that every reader cracks open the book with a certain high expectation of what the story will be—which is partially unfair to the author. I liked Donnelly's interpretation of the stepsisters and her wicked portrayal of the stepmother. However, I had trouble identifying with the main character Sophie...
