I love to read crime novels so the ‘prelude’ did immediately capture my attention and created a desire to want to read the book. However, chapter 1 left me a bit confused and I had to flip back and forth to the prelude several times in order to get a feel for who Emily is, where she lives and when. But by the end of the first chapter, Charity had made it much clearer and any doubts about the characters, their relationship and geographical locations had been adequately dispelled and any thoughts of ditching the book for a more interesting read were deeply buried.
The following chapters set the scene beautifully, giving vivid descriptions of Emily’s childhood and, particularly to a British reader, emphasising the lifestyle differences between the UK and the far reaches of New Zealand. I was particularly intrigued because there are many such novels set in the UK and USA, but I would normally associate ‘peace and tranquillity' with New Zealand.
I love how Charity has described Emily’s father, Felix Kirkland’s, onset of Alzheimer’s disease; something that few people understand unless they have experience first hand themselves, Using it as means of unravelling the plot, the very essence of the story is in itself captivating. I look forward to reading the full novel.
