The muted design of the book cover would never have enticed me to pick it up in a bookshop but then I would have missed out on a cracking read. The story follows Emily as she leaves her home in London and returns to New Zealand to look after her father who has Alzheimer's. Twenty-five years ago Emily's friend Leah vanished while out on a hike and the mystery of her disappearance has overshadowed the small rural community ever since. As Emily tries to get to grips with her father's failing mental health he starts to let things slip, shocking things that imply he may know something about what happened to Leah all those years ago. This book is very well written, the descriptions of Emily's father's illness are poignant and heartbreakingly accurate to anyone with experience of dementia, and the underlying mystery kept me guessing right to the end.
