Beautiful scene setting in New Zealand along with Maori references. I found the handling of a father’s alzheimers demise very empathetic and could wholly relate to the youngest sibling being expected to deal with the situation even though she was the other side of the world. The other siblings were just “too busy” with their own lives. I did find the plot rather slow moving compared to books I normally read but this would not stop me reading what appears to be an intriguing novel. The fact he gives this daughter the letter to be opened after his death, with the knowledge that it will cause issues, I feel runs true to life, as do a lot of aspects in this book. I can see me reading the whole book having to remind myself it is not a true story like some I have read. It will be interesting to see how the characters have developed from the youngsters and friends they were 25 years ago to who they became and how the friendships are rekindled… or not
