This seemed like a great mystery book and while it was, there was so much more to it as well. The story is about Emily and how the life she has now, living in London, is changed as she returns to her home in New Zealand to care for her father. The story tells brilliantly tells the relationship between Emily and her father, who is suffering from Alzheimer's, as it was and what is has now become.
As well as weaving her way in this new part of her life, it also tells the story of Leah, who 25 years previously vanished never to be seen again. 'They never found Leah Parata. Not a boot, not a backpack, not a turquoise beanie. After she left me that day, she vanished off the face of the earth.' Emily was the last known person to speak to her before she vanished and her dad led the efforts to try to locate her after she vanished. To make it more complicated Leah's mum and brother still live next door to her dad and they too have the grief of loosing a loved one, as well as their own medical issues.
The book is beautifully told and is a great read and insight into relationships and dramas.
