This was a marvellous read about Emily who returns to New Zealand after many years in England as she is alerted to her fathers failing health by his neighbour and her elder siblings are too caught up in their own lives to assist him. Emily didn’t have an easy relationship with her father who was distant in his manner and it was very interesting to see how his Alzheimer’s altered his personality and their relationship. Their story is intertwined with a twenty five year old missing person mystery which Emily is coming to fear may involve her father and she finds that she is terrified to uncover the truth as she suspects his involvement.
Overall this is a fantastic character read and very sensitive to the issue of Alzheimer’s, the dynamics of Emily’s family is fascinating and the way the mystery of Leah Parata’s disappearance is unravelled is not only heartbreaking but also incredibly thoughtful and thought provoking.
