This book is set in New Zealand in present time and time hops back to the 90's when our main character, a young seemingly naive girl in her early 20's, waves goodbye to her esteemed friend who is setting off on a hike.
She is never seen again.
Fast forward to the present day and our main character is all grown up, living in the UK and has a family of her own.
She gets a phone call from her old neighbour and mother of the missing girl urging her to come home to New Zealand as her father, a retired doctor, is struggling with Alzhiemers Disease.

Upon arrival she finds the family home covered in post it notes written by the father to remind himself to do everyday tasks like how to use a can opener and when to feed the dog.

Our main character is given a letter from her father which he tells her not to be opened until after his death.
And this appears the be the crux of our story.

It is written very beautifully but also very easy to read. There lots of descriptions of the local area but not over flowery as to distract from the main topic of the book.
