This is a really good book on several levels.

Emily is guilt tripped by an old family friend into returning to New Zealand from London to visit her father who is suffering from Alzheimer’s. She inevitably decides to stay longer and what follows is the revealing of a tragic family story.

The depiction of the ravages of Alzheimer’s is itself a frightening story but really well portrayed. Understanding the family dynamics and how events influence relationships throughout their lives slots in well within the narrative.

The mystery surrounding Leah Parata’s disappearance had me guessing right till the end and absolutely kept me hooked.

There is also a skilled setting of the scene in a way that conjures up grand images of beautiful and wild scenery where you can almost feel the cold coming through the pages of the book.

Overall an enjoyable read.
