This book was not what I expected. I thought it was going to be a murder mystery so I wasn’t ready to be so moved. I do not cry easily but I would suggest that you have a tissue or two handy when you read this.

It is difficult to review this book without giving too much away or repeating the synopsis on the back cover, so I will try and explain some of the reasons why I rate it so highly.

The author has created strong, interesting, realistic and rounded characters that develop as the story unfolds. I particularly liked the main character of Emily who narrates the story and also the interesting dynamics between her, her family and the other characters in the book. The subject of dementia is addressed with so much compassion and understanding, from both the sufferer’s and the family’s perspective, I can only imagine that the author has personal experience of the disease. The plot is clever, interesting and nothing seems contrived or forced; to me the whole story was believable.

As I said at the beginning of my review, having read what was a really interesting story, by the end of the book I was genuinely moved to tears and there are not many authors or books that have that effect on me. An excellent piece of fiction writing.
