Missy Carmichael lives a lonely and empty life, sadly grieving a family that she has lost. Defensive and stubborn Missy believes that she deserves her loneliness, especially after what she's done. But a chance encounter with two women at the park opens Missy's small world into something much larger. Is Missy brave enough to step into this new life? At 79 years old, is it time for Missy to get her second chance?

I absolutely adored this beautifully written story of an elderly lady's loneliness and her eventual freedom from pain and loneliness. Missy is written to be stubborn and prickly but she is also endearing. The author painted Missy's character perfectly and I absolutely adored Missy. The author painted a very gradual change in Missy, with the help of her new friends, and captured her inner most feelings along the way. I found myself cheering with Missy when she had a little win, and I found my heart breaking with hers during times of sadness. Missy also reminisces about her past, her husband, her life as a mother and as a grandmother which adds another layer to this story. I felt a variety of emotions whilst reading this story and I felt sadness at having to leave Missy when the story ended.

This story is a beautiful piece of work and I am so surprised that this is a debut novel, it is so refreshing and heartfelt. I would recommend this story to all right now. It is important to reach out to those who may be feeling lonely, especially with the circumstances around us, and just offer something simple as friendship. It could change someone's life.

If you liked Eleanor Oliphant is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman or if you liked The Lonely Life of Biddy Weir by Lesley Allen, then you will love Saving Missy.
