A slow burn

I don't think I'd have ever picked this up in a shop or library. The cover and blurb give the impression of a story thats altogether too fluffy for my liking, and I don't feel they really harmonise with the actual book.
This was a real slow burner and for the first half of the book I found it a bit of a slog, mainly because I found it difficult to engage with the main character, Missy. I suppose really it's a mark of the character's own arc that I grew more fond of her as she opened up through the story.
I had guessed the twist at the end but it didnt make it any less bittersweet and I actually found myself a little choked up in places by the end of the book.
If you're looking for a fast paced story this isn't the one, but it was a gentle and heartfelt read that touched on a lot of issues experienced by many, not only the elderly, with grace and a good sense of humour.
