I needed something and relaxing after my last few reads! I’m so glad I picked up Saving Missy as it was just what I needed, a lovely light story about a 79-year old woman’s second chance at life. Missy Carmichael lives alone in a beautiful big house in Stoke Newington. Her husband is no longer with her, her son lives in Australia and she has a strained relationship with her daughter. Missy spends her days alone and miserable. At the start of the new year, 2016, she goes to her local park to watch the stunning of this fish. This event seems to stun her in to something of a renaissance and Missy Carmichael starts to change her life. She begins to make friends, she acquires a lovely dog who gets her out of the house every day and Missy starts to live again. We see lonely, sad, cantankerous Missy blossom in to a happy, braver version of herself. Saving Missy is a story about friendship, kindness and courage.

I really enjoyed reading this. It was interesting that it was set in 2016 with memories of the Brexit vote, and the beloved celebrities we lost that year. I loved that the central focus was on female friendships. I enjoyed the narrative style that flipped between Missy’s current life and her memories of the past. The characters were vivid and relatable. It’s hard to believe that this is Beth Morrey’s debut, her writing is so good and I’m glad that her second book is coming next year as I think I could become a fan!
