An enjoyable novel that gives insights into the life of an elderly English woman called Missy who has lost her husband to dementia, her daughter to estrangement and her son and grandson to Australia. Missy’s life has become isolated, lonely and purposeless until, through the kindness of strangers and a dog called Bob, she begins to re-engage with the world. She also begins to find her ‘other self’, one that has buried during years of caring for her husband and children.
I'm not sure I forgive the author for this but I would definitely read more of her work as I really liked her writing style, character development and I also learned a lot of new words!
I adored this story. My heart broke for Missy on every page. I whooped for her triumphs and a grieved the sad times along with her. The mixture of time frames is seamlessly interwoven and you really do get a full picture of why Missy is the way she is.
