This was a lovely heartfelt story, with some well-drawn characters. It is interesting to have the main lead as an octogenarian although, and I’m sure it must be me and not the author’s intention, I didn’t warm to the main character of Missy at all. So many reviewers have said she is sad and lonely, which she is, but that comes across as being very much her own fault and part of her character. I really struggled to feel any sympathy for her and it is unusual for me not to warm to a lead character in this type of novel. The subject of isolation and loneliness in old age is a valuable subject for a book and particularly so with Covid restrictions, but I felt from the flashbacks that Missy had almost chosen this way of life and she could have changed things a long while ago. I’m not really into weak characters and as hard as I tried, I could not find much sympathy for her.

Despite me not warming to the main character, it did not stop me thoroughly enjoying the book. There were times when the storyline pushed the boundaries of credibility a bit but then we all need a little bit of escapism now and again. Overall l felt the story was very well written and a pleasure to read.
