Millicent (or Missy) as she is known, is all alone and desperately lonely. During her daily walk to the park she has a "turn" and faints, after being rescued by a kindly dog walker, she recovers and eventually returns home, alone, lonely and missing her late husband. During the book she remembers meeting her husband and her family growing up, but unfortunately her life is all made up of memories.
This is a dual timeline story in a way, with Missy remembering and reminiscing about her life, her parents and the rest of her family, her evacuation during the war and her college life in Cambridge, which always goes back to the fact that Missy is very, very lonely. Everyone else is either dying or being fully involved with their families. What she didn't realise was that an offer asked by Angela to look after a dog was going to change her life completely. Bob or Bobby (who was a female dog) changes her life, gives her purpose, gets her out of the house and meeting people. People who over a space of just a few months become really good friends.
This is a debut novel by Beth Morrey and it's a lovely book (and also so very, very sad in places) about people, dogs and life in general, life that ticks by before you realise it, life that makes you appreciate your friends and family. Loneliness can creep into anyone's life, but with a little friendship and kindness, it can be turned into something else and this book has that something else, something which gets under your skin and you can't forget.
A truly lovely 5☆ read from me, loved it.
