Saving Missy - Missy Carmichael, 79, is a lonely, cantankerous lady who lives on her own in London. Her two children have left home - one has emigrated to Australia with her beloved Grandson. The other, her daughter whom she is estranged from for reasons we find out as the story enfolds, lives in Cambridge. Her Husband Leo is gone as well. She is left in the family home which despite being far too big, too cold and sparsely furnished; she is reluctant to leave and venture outside. However, she does. She goes to the nearby park where she meets Sylvie, Angela and her son Otis. These three people are about to play a huge role in her life, they become the best of friends and Missy's life suddenly has purpose. They even convince her to adopt a friend's dog!
The book takes you back through her life, giving an understanding of her upbringing, her student years, her marriage and relationships. You start to feel for her and care for this strong, funny, lonely woman. It's tender and emotional. It's heart-warming with a twist at the end I wasn't expecting.
