‘Saving Missy’ by Beth Morrey is a simply gorgeous tale which follows Missy, a lady of somewhat advanced years who, at the start of the novel is heartbreakingly lonely. Her son lives in Australia and her and her daughter have a strained relationship! Then she meets Sylvie and Angela and suddenly a new world opens up to her: cafe visits, babysitting duties, Christmas invites and, of course, Bobby the dog.
The novel explores Missy’s past and her relationships as well as considering the difficulties of growing older as we begin to lose those around us, deal with managing on a pension as well as learning to accept, and re-write, some of the mistakes you may have made.
However, for Missy, the strength of community and friendship become a real saviour!
This is a perfect read for fans of the up-lit genre. I completely loved it! It was just what I needed to be reading right now!
