The creepily atmospheric first-person stream of consciouness in the prologue continues the inside-outside mystery of the disturbing cover.

What a contrast to the healthy outdoor family horse-riding scene in the first chapter! I've only visited California twice but the land came alive for me from Alan Drew's description. It takes a masterful writer to create such pictures from so few words.
