Okay, everyone can't be Michael Connolly, but this writer is having a good go at it.
This is a pretty good thriller set in the suburbs of L.A.
A damaged cop who has opted to retreat from the city, hoping to find a degree of peace in a less demanding environment, comes up against a particularly revolting serial killer, and in the course of the investigation, puts himself and his family in danger.
There is good observation of this slightly unusual backdrop, and of the lives of Mexican itinerant workers who struggle to make a living in what for them is a hostile environment, always in danger of harassment and deportation.
Generally the pace is kept up, and the plotting works well, the main character, the cop, spends rather too much time just feeling depressed. I know how he feels, but sometimes had the urge to shout at him to just get a grip.
All in all, a good and easy read.
