This really is a great book. It's presented as a psychological thriller - a serial killer is on the loose and we're following Ben the cop and Natasha the District Medical Examiner as they try and catch the perpetrator - but this is not a one dimensional story.
In fact the sub plot, the body of an illegal Mexican found on a field, is the catalyst for opening up a whole different investigation which has Ben re-examining and facing up to his own past. This element of the story is more absorbing than that of the serial killer as the reader really gets a glimpse into the depths of the characters and past experiences, that are very much influencing who they are today.
Given it's genre it has a deftly subtle touch, using language that gets you under the skin of the characters and vividly paints the scene for you. It keeps you guessing from start to finish (to the point where I really went off beam when considering who the killer might be!). An excellent book that would have universal appeal.
