I love crime novels, and I really enjoyed reading Shadow Man. Unlike many thrillers, it is beautifully written and very descriptive; I liked the 1980s setting in Southern California and could easily picture the community around which the book is set.

This is not a fast-paced, gory crime novel, although some difficult topics are covered. In fact it's quite slow in parts but that is all part of its charm. I liked Ben Wade very much indeed - he's a complicated character with a secret, but a decent sort of bloke. I enjoyed reading about his background, and learning what makes him tick. I liked the style of writing, which is quite different from other crime novels I have read, and I look forward to reading more books by Alan Drew if they're as good as this one.
