I found this story of Michael Emmett's life fascinating, intriguing, dark and profound. This fairly short book covers Michael's whole life story from childhood so not too much time is spent on any particular life period/event. I found the psychology of Michael really interesting from the nature/nurture side of things and seeing how experiences in his childhood shaped the man he became.

I was expecting Michael to have found religion and for it to have saved him from a life of crime but I found that actually religion was a part of him and his family's life even while he was heavily involved with crime. It was interesting that Michael spent just a few years of his life in prison but that it was enough to ensure he turned his life around. It goes to show that people can be rehabilitated and that religion can play an important role in that.

The life story was fascinating but I found the storytelling and writing style a little basic in places with some thoughts repeated often throughout the book. This let the book down for me a little along with the lack of detail during many of the life events described. I do recommend you read this book if you are looking for a gritty life story on redemption.
