I had high hopes for this book but I'm disappointed. The style of writing is very tell rather than show, a sort of stream of consciousness going rapidly from one thing to the next and name dropping so fast I couldn't keep up. It gave me the feeling that the author had forgotten the reader didn't share his familiarity with the people or events he was referencing. Therefore I found it hard to follow at times.
For the first half of the book, at the start of each chapter the author refers back to how broken he was by childhood sexual abuse. Of course I don't doubt that sexual abuse is traumatic but I found this all rather heavy-handed and spelling it out for the reader, as if I couldn't have made any inferences without the signposting. Similarly with his finding religion and wanting to change his ways, it all turned a bit heavy handed and preachy for my liking.
However, the story does give an interesting insight into a life unlike many others so for that reason I've given it two stars.
