I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed this book, after receiving it and having a full read of the back and inside blurbs, I was worried that the book would either push ‘the religious experience’ angle too forcefully or that the background story of how the author came to be who he is would be falsely inflated. Thankfully, it was neither.

This book doesn’t glamourise the author’s upbringing, it lays out the nitty gritty alongside wistful looks at an almost content family life. The book is written in a diary style, and at times this feels a little stunted - like some bits had been cut out, and at times, the language and the storytelling is almost childlike - although it fits very well with the subject of the story.

I did enjoy the book overall, it gives a very unique look into family life when crime is an almost daily occurrence, and gives perspective on the author’s life and how he got to where he is now.
