I was gripped as soon as I began reading. This book grabs your attention from the first page and keeps you reading. Kellen is an underdog in the fantasy world. He possesses no magic and is destined to fall into a serving class if he cannot pass his trials by the time he is 16. A prospect made even worse by the fact his father is renowned for his power and his younger sister is proving to be just as skilled.
You easily get sucked in by Kellen as the underdog there to prove himself to be something which he knows he is not. I loved the fast pace and the intelligence shown with the writing. Kellen was quick witted and smart and he used that intelligence to begin his path to prove himself when everyone believes him to be less. You can easily cheer him on because everyone loved themselves an underdog. And an underdog who is working a con? Even better!
