A fresh, intriguing take on magic and animal companions
It took a while for me to get into this book. It started as a slow burn as we delve into he world and how there are different types of magic present, before, building up to a fiery crescendo that had me gripped to the last page.
I adored Ferius and Reichis as their wit and sarcasm dropped off the pages. Kellan is a very interesting character who I feel has a lot more potential than he even realises.
I also loved the fresh take on magic and without spoiling anything, towards the end I felt as desperate as Kellan himself in his situation! I especially liked the Argosi and their philosophies.
The only major issue I had with the book was the romance. We are told from page one that Kellan is in love with one of his fellow initiates but throughout the book I never really felt that connection between them. Maybe it will develop later, who knows?
I look forward to seeing where the series goes!
