This book explores the themes of family, belonging, journey, friendship, love, mystery, and magic. This book is beautifully written and the world it creates is immersive. The characters are made with flaws, yet that makes them all the more amazing. Kellen who is the protagonist, exhibits no cliché qualities of a hero yet he is still a loveable character. He struggles with his abilities in magic and sparking his bands and is constantly overshadowed by his younger sister who is very proficient for her age. Kellen has to battle with this and also discover where he belongs is his clan's society.
The inclusion of magic allows the story to advance but the story also focuses on dreams and the importance of feeling included. This book is a very good introduction in to this world and brilliantly sets up the next books of the series.
