I give this book, the first of the Spellslinger series, a 4.5/5. It would have definitely have been a five if it didn't have a few minor problems. But I am so excited to read Shadowblack!

Things I loved:
1. The characters: wow, this book has the most awesome characters I've read! Kellen, Reichis and especially Ferius Parfax (one of my fav book characters ever!).

2. The world building: fantasy books are scary to get into, with all the magical terms, groups of people etc. so I was glad that Spellslinger was easy to understand quickly, and I loved the building up of the world throughout.

3. The layout: probably everyone considering reading this or who have read it no doubt are attracted to it because of the BEAUTIFUL cover and section dividers (Two of Spells etc.). Another thing I really appreciated was the fact that the chapters were named. I don't know, it just gave it a real nice feel.

Things that I wasn't so keen on:
1. I noticed it most often in the first half of the book, but it was the sentences where Kellen would describe what emotion he thought others may have been feeling before saying "No... [insert different emotion here]", or something similar. I suppose it could be a metaphor for Kellen's disconnection with others, but still.

2. The pace: Obviously, I love the world building, BUT sometimes it was a little bit slow. It felt like not a lot happened until the climax (where it went down!), which caused me to read the book less often and quite slowly.

But overall, I really really really liked this book and the whole concept of it, I can't wait to pick up the next one! I recommend it to anyone looking for a cool magical (kinda Western-y) book with cool characters!
