This was the first time I've read one of Sebastian De Castell's books, being a lover of magic and fantasy, I think that De Castell produced a realistic magical world. This book shows that the people (in this case the Jan'tep) you thought were heroic or great , were people who killed the innocent and murdered for the oasis. The protagonist, Kellen, finds out that he has been living a lie, basically. His magic has disappeared just before earning his mage's name. During the story Kellen meets an Argosi woman, Ferius and a nekhek( a "dangerous" magical creature).

To be honest I thought the plot really caught me in and that Kellen showed that he wasn't a Jan'tep or a weakling, a Sha'tep. Instead he finds out that he is forever a Spellslinger.
