I loved the Greatcoats quadrilogy, and of course was excited to see what Sebastian De Castile did next.
This book feels a little like it was written for a slightly younger audience than his previous work but doesn't suffer for it. From the opening set up of dueling mages, you know something interesting is happening here.
The characters are not fully formed in the opening pages, leaving you with lots of questions already - who are they, why are they preparing to fight?
I do prefer a mise en scene opener, gets you right into the story without any preamble. It will be interesting to see where the series (and the rest of the book) goes.
