I have to say the first thing that caught my eye was the magnificent cover. This cover made me desperate to read this book! The way it was set out with the magic, the card game, just had me really excited for a magical, twisty plot, with devious and sassy characters, and guess what I got? Just that!
I have to admit I went in to this thinking it was going to be a lot like A Gathering of Shadows by V.E Shwab, with the whole magical trials/game. It wasn't! And that was great - because what I got was equally amazing and fun.
I loved the characters. They were sassy and strong, some of them down-right mean and I wanted to kick them. Such effective writing, and I think with this one there was such strong character development.
